English politician, member of the new Liberal Democrats party. In 2002 he founded Sense About Science www.senseaboutscience.org.uk, a charity with the objective of advancing public understanding of science and the evidence-based approach to scientific issues.
Taverne has written extensively about the dangers of the current suspicion of modern science in medicine, as shown in the popularity of alternative medicine such as homeopathy, and in agriculture, as shown in the fashion for organic farming and the hostility towards genetically modified crops. In 2006 he was voted by the Association of British Science Writers as “Parliamentary Science Communicator of the Yearâ€.
