Three weeks ago, on March 10, the Advocate General of the European Union’s Court of Justice, issued a non-binding preliminary opinion “in complete independence” on the question of the meaning of the term “human embryo” in the 1998 European Commission directive on the patentability of biotechnology inventions.

Briefly, I would say that Science is not the enemy; science would not be science if it does not fulfil the human quest of discovery, wherever it may lead. The true enemy is human dialogue on the one hand and abuse of science on the other. Human dialogue is often found solely under the disguise of confrontation and argumentation without any effort to empty oneself of one's prejudices to truly understand the other. This holds usually for both sides of the argument.

Dear Colleagues,
If we ask someone what comes into mind about Hungary, the answer is mostly two things. The first is Puskás, the legendary Hungarian football player of the Real Madrid. We do not want to include his success into the new Constitution, not like the other thing that always comes into mind about Hungary: the revolution of 1956. Even though the new Hungarian democracy derives its roots from the heroism of the revolution of 1956, the present Hungarian Constitution does not mention this outstanding historical moment.

Hungarian Civil Liberties Union (HCLU) is a human rights watch-dog NGO established in 1994. The HCLU received an invitation to take part in the work of the ad-hoc Parliamentarian Committee on Constitution Drafting. HCLU declined the invitation. The reasons why HCLU made this decision reflects our opinion on the draft of the new Constitution.
